Tearing and Tired Eyes

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

The excess skin above your eyelashes that makes you look more tired is easily removed under local anesthesia. This can occur at any age but is more common as you approach your forties. If the skin is redundant on the upper lids it is often associated with a sense of excess tearing as well. The two conditions can be improved with a procedure usually covered by your insurance. A visual field study is performed to see if you meet the insurance criterion. The upper blepharoplasty improves the obstruction of the visual field by removing the excess skin and herniated fat that weighs down the lid. The canthopexy improves the excess tearing problem by tightening the mechanism that siphons tears out of the eye to drain into the nose. The lower lid lift procedure is often combined cosmetically to improve the overall tired appearance, and doesn’t add to the recovery time. Sutures are removed in about 7 days.

P.S. Blepharoplasty can be performed with conscious sedation.
