Angle 1

This 66 year old retired man from Mentor, Ohio had concerns about the appearance of his upper lids and brow.  He felt he had a tired appearance and did not like the hooded look that he saw in the mirror.  Patients who have this situation often have visual field obstruction and indeed he did.  Men and women who golf have a hard time hitting their drive and then have difficulty finding the path of the golf ball as it sails through the air in their upper visual field.  An upper blepharoplasty can alleviate this inability to follow the golf ball through the air. As you can see on the multiple views, his upper lid skin is resting on his eyelashes and causing him to see his lashes and obstruct his upper visual fields.  His post-operative views show the alleviation of the excess skin and the improved function and appearance of his upper lids.  He looks more refreshed and rested.  His incision is imperceptible in the crease of his upper lid wrinkle.

Angle 2

The appearance of this northeast Ohio 66 year old man demonstrates how the pupil is partially covered by the overhanging skin of his upper eyelids.  As you can see from the phots  few weeks post operatively, this is alleviated.  His upper blepharoplasty or eyelid lift, gives him a refreshed appearance as well as better vision!  His procedure was performed with IV sedation as an outpatient.  He had a little bruising and swelling but could drive the next day.  He was satisfied with the result from the very next day, even though he was a little bruised after surgery.  Arnica Montana helps to alleviate bruising, and was begun two days before surgery.  He was taken off aspirin and Plavix 7 days prior to surgery, and went back on them both the next day.

Angle 3

The oblique views show this 66 year old retired Lake county resident who has visual field obstruction and tired appearing eyes.  He and I spoke about the combination problems of having a heavy brow from genetics and aging that contributed to the heavy appearance of his upper face.  His upper lid skin was in excess and was nicely improved with the removal of the excess skin and herniated fat of his upper lids.  He still has some extra heaviness that could be alleviated with a brow lift.  Not everyone wants the 1 inch incisions in the hair bearing scalp that would completely improve  that shape.  His incisions are only in the upper lid crease above the eye lashes.  He is very happy with the visual field improvement.  He is especially happy that he underwent visual field testing and photography by my practice.  It allowed him to get his upper lid blepharoplasty covered by his health care insurance!  Not all situations are medically necessary and a consultation, visual field study and measurements as well as careful ocular photography can properly document the condition for submission as a predetermination for surgey covered by your health care plan.  Dr. Vanek will review the elements of this for you when you are in consultation in his Mentor office
